What Inspired Me to Become a CBT Therapist

Blog
I have always been drawn to people, their stories, their experiences and the quiet moments where someone feels truly seen. Long before I considered therapy as a profession, I noticed that people often felt comfortable opening up to me. Creating a sense of safety, offering warmth and listening with care felt natural, not forced. Over time, this way of connecting became something deeper, a calling that gently guided me toward becoming a CBT therapist.
Supporting others has always felt meaningful to me. Whether through working with the general public or being part of organisations focused on care and wellbeing, I found genuine purpose in helping people navigate challenges and feel less alone. It never felt like “just a job”. It felt like work rooted in compassion, responsibility and human connection.
CBT, in particular, felt like the right fit, both professionally and personally. The approach aligned naturally with how I think and how I support others. It is thoughtful, structured and practical, while still leaving space for empathy and reflection. CBT also supported me through my own challenging moments, helping me understand patterns, manage difficult thoughts and approach life with greater clarity. Experiencing this firsthand deepened my respect for the model and strengthened my desire to offer the same support to others.
My background in social work further shaped the way I practise today. Working closely with families and individuals taught me how deeply social circumstances, life stressors and relationships influence our thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It helped me develop a realistic and compassionate understanding of people’s experiences and reinforced the importance of meeting clients where they are, without judgement.
Becoming a CBT therapist has felt like a natural and meaningful path, one that brings together my experience, my curiosity about people and my belief in the power of gentle, practical support. I feel genuinely grateful to walk alongside clients as they grow, heal and rediscover their strength. Every journey is different, and it is a privilege to be part of theirs.
